‘Obesity’ – The word ‘ Obesity’ has been derived from the Latin word ‘ Obesus’ which means ‘ to eat away or to devour. Obesity thus has ‘over eating’ as it’s fundamental cause.

What Obesity can do ?

‘Obesity’ is a blemish which slowly but surely erodes health. It is dangerous to the Heart as it creates many Cardiac hazards !

‘Obesity’ pre-disposes premature coronary Heart disease. It also leads to Hyper tension, Diabetes, and raises harmful fat and uric acid levels in the blood. The cholesterol and triglyceride levels will be raised in fatty people. It also increases mental stress !

‘Obesity’ by itself constitutes a risk factor and also accelerates or enhances many other risks. It has also been associated with Heart attack and even sudden death.

Tiredness, aches, and pains particularly in the knees, lower back, feet, infection of skin, oedema ( swelling) of the ankles are common problems.

During walking, a person has to carry an extra load of 50 to 100 lbs. ( excess fat) and these alone make him short breath.

Flatulance (gases), manifestation of gastro-esophagal reflex (burning pain behind breast bone and upper abdomen are common in obese people.

There is an increased incidence of gall stones, pancreatic inflammation and hernia. The liver is often enlarged owing to deposition of fat.

In obese females, complication of pregnancy such as pre-clamsia hypertention, pregnancy Diabetes , and wound infections are more frequent. Caesarion deliveries are much more common in obese women. Maternal and foetal mortality rates are also higher in them.

Excessive fat deposition leads to skin folds which remain saggy around axilla, under the breast, perineal region and protruberent abdomen. They are prone to develop skin infections like fungal infections. Ugly stretch marks can be seen in obese females on the abdomen and joints. Obesity induces an inferiority complex.

Respiratory disturbances, excessive sleep, high cholesterol, stunted growth, sluggish activity can be observed in obesed.

Therefore it is clear that practically every organ of the body is affected adversely in obese persons.

Causes of Obesity :

1) Genetic and heriditory factors.
2) Cultural factors.
3) Endocrinal factors.
4) Age- there is a tendency to gain weight with advancement of age.
5) Mental and emotional factors.
6) Obesity in children is much more common when parents are obese.
7) Food habits – intake of high caloric content but low nutrient value.
8) Women have a greater amount of subcutaneous fat than men. Birth control pills administration also leads to obesity.
9) The malfunction of appetite centre in brain leads to over feeding / eating resulting in ‘ Hypo thalamic obesity’. Some times Brain injuries also lead to obesity.

Types of Obesity :

The pattern of obesity differs in Gents and Ladies. In males obesity is most pronounced in the upper trunk and spares thr extremities. In females, fatty distribution is predominantly in the lower trunk and involves mostly and particularly the lower extremities. Obese persons possess generally enlarged organs , large fatty liver, cardiac enlargement are frequently found in extreme obesity.

Diagnosis:

The most commonly used method of diagnosing obesity is through Height – Weight Chart. Perfect proportions are rated at an almost equal bust and hip measurement, with a waist ten inches less.

Excess food taken is stored in the body as fat in the form of fat cells which are distributed all over the body, making up 10 to 25% of body weight. If any body is 10 to 15 kgs. Over weight, he will be on the way to obesity.

In India, a women is considered either ‘girlish’, or if she is older, ‘manly’ if she does’nt possess cushiony figure.’ You know, the’ right curves at right places ‘ as a male describes his feminine ideal ! The concept is manifested in our screen stars.
